On July 31 at 6 pm, artist Viktoria Berezina will speak at the Tartu Art Museum about her collage series A Face Assembled from Noise.
Known as an ambassador of the Ukrainian folk art tradition Petrykivka and the author of the acclaimed book My Kherson, Viktoria Berezina presents works in the museum that emerge from the self-search of a person who has lost their home—and thereby their identity—due to war.
The collage series, created in 2023 in Berezina’s studio at Aparaaditehas in Tartu, initially felt so personal and painful to the artist that she considered destroying it. Having fled Kherson for Tartu in 2022, Berezina has quickly become part of the Estonian art scene, as evidenced by numerous exhibitions she has participated in or curated. Perhaps it is precisely this professional confidence that has allowed her to once again turn her gaze toward the trauma of war.
The conversation will be held in Ukrainian and Estonian. Participation with an exhibition ticket.
Viktoria Berezina’s exhibition A Face Assembled from Noise will remain open at the Tartu Art Museum until September 29. The exhibition is accompanied by a catalogue that includes an interview with the artist and her commentary on each of the exhibited works.
